The Gospel

Have You Heard The Good News?

The word "Gospel" simply means "good news." The Apostle Paul summarized the Gospel in I Corinthians 15:1-4. In these brief verses, he summarizes the essential message of the whole Bible:

Christ died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). His death on the cross is the payment for our sins and His resurrection is the "receipt" or proof that what He did is sufficient and final.

To put it another way, the Bible says that all of us are sinners (Romans 3:23). The result or consequence of our sin is death — both spiritual and physical (Romans 6:23). But, God demonstrated how much He loves us by sending Jesus to die on the cross for our sins (Romans 5:8). We need to individually believe in and receive Christ as our personal savior by faith (Romans 10:9-1013).

We can only come into a personal relationship with God by faith. Forgiveness and salvation cannot be earned. It is a free gift from God, not a result of our good works. (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Three words summarize this idea in John 1:12-13:

  • Believe – we need to believe and put our faith and trust in Christ alone as our savior.
  • Receive – we need to personally and individually invite Christ to come into our life.
  • Become – when we do this, we become part of God’s family!
